HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

LUNCHEON MEETING

At lunchtime today, is ‘The Day’—‘The Day’ I would finally meet a few old classmates who had eluded much of my memories. Just before I reached Garden Orchid Hotel, I was already picturing Thomas in my mind. He had that typical Chinese look and was few inches taller than me when we were still in high school. I guess there would be no drastic change in his feature, just like Leonardo when I first met him some ten years ago.

Excitement was building up that when I finally found Mimi, I couldn’t contain myself marveling at how Bio Ching maintained her voluptuous body—slim and still sexy. On our Girl’s counterpart, I met Wahida Tan, Zenaida, Carmencita Viray and Bio Ching. I was already on my second cup of coffee, when Tom finally appeared. Just as what I’ve expected, Tom gained a bit with rounder waistline, double-chin and the look of his father. Obviously, he didn’t recognize me and Mimi was really good in making everything in suspense. After the ‘hi-hello’ and other pleasantries, he just smiled at me was really clueless who he was looking at. When I finally broke the ice, he was grinning from cheek to cheek and confessed he couldn’t believe I am what I turned out to be after 33 years!

Then all of the sudden, our conversation became more erratic without particular subject—shifting from good old days, old classmates to friends and from work to families then back again. I could see in his eyes those missing picture of our friendship. Reminiscing those childhood crushes, despair, frustrations and hope of what we wanted to be, which obviously far from what we had ever dreamed of.

When I was in Junior High, I wanted to be a linguist or journalist so that I could explore the world and eventually would end up in the United Nations amidst the giants of world leaders. However after the fateful incident in Jolo in 1974, I was forced to stop from continuing my studies. It took me seven years to finish a four-year course in commerce. By right, I should have finished my BSC before my 19th birthday. Anyway in 1981, I finally got my diploma and graduated from Ateneo de Zamboanga with a degree of Bachelors of Science in Commerce, Major I Accountancy..

While I was still toiling in the classroom and occasionally in the library, Leonard was on his sophomore year at UST medical school, while Tom was already gainfully employed. I didn’t get much information about the others, but with Mimi around, I should be able to gather something to complete this blog.

I remember right after the civil war in Jolo, I was able to catch up with Luis Godinez, our darling-rose among the patches of ‘musingan’ and rouge boys. Never a dull day in our school when he was around, even when we were at detention hall, he had always ways to make us laugh, thus extending to few minutes our detention time. I wonder what had become of him.

Musing at what had transpired that night, only when I met old classmates and old friends did I realize I’ve metamorphosed into a handsome, debonair and zestful young man. At 50, I was after all full of excitement that night especially when I got few ladies to burn the dance floor with me in those sensual groovy moves of cha-cha-cha, swing and boogie. Too bad I didn’t have the right partner to do the Tango, Mambo, Salsa, Rumba & the Waltz.

I’ll wait for Mimi to provide me the corresponding photos.

INTO THE END OF MARCH 1973

HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

Towards the end of March 1973

Jolo was transformed into a political hotbed when Nur Misuari took up the arms and formed the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) purportedly supported by Malaysia thru’ it’s financial umbrella---the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC). There were mounting recruitment campaigns in the local colleges as well as in the various mosques throughout the island.

Towards the end of 1972, the political atmosphere in Jolo at that time was getting more and more tensed with rumors of military’s imminent house-to-house search and the imposition of dusk-to-dawn curfew. For the first time also, the traditional Midnight Mass of the Catholic Church was re-timed three hours earlier and all night revelries in December came to an abrupt halt!

By early March, we were already informed that there would be no commencement exercise for us. Some of our classmates who came from the hinterlands stopped going to school and those who were from the South were already asked by their parents to leave Jolo. Our parents also kept on sending people to bring us back home to North Ubian, Pangutaran, Sulu. I don’t remember having a formal farewell to our teachers and classmates as the start of summer approaches.

There were already a number of naval boats stationed at various vantage points in the Sulu Sea, just as few fighting planes were constantly hovering above us. The common sight of choppers and tanks was like the harbinger of something catastrophic and the presence of the military jeeps rambling around the town made you feel as if you were in the middle of Hollywood’s war movies. Somehow rather the intrusion of the military in our town didn’t stop the people from doing their daily business. There were still boats plying Jolo water, just as PAL was still flying to full capacity. At 15, I was not even aware of the adverse implication and had no idea what it was meant to be under martial law. Like I said we were still doing what we were supposed to be doing.

Among our group, only Francis Cid had a full picture of what was going on since he had older siblings studying in Manila. He could even talk about ‘Habeas Corpus’, Martial Law’, ‘Freedom of Speech’ and ‘Civil Liberties’ with ease and we only listen. And when I looked back, I was wondering whether or not I was interested or just tried to impress the group and looked interested! For those who have relatives in Manila, we were told the situation was worst, especially for those students who were actively involved in ceaseless and senseless protest, picketing and political rallies. I wonder also if that was the reason why our teachers or even the Brothers didn’t bring the issue to us for fear of being branded as instigators if not as undesirable rebels. Curfew had been declared throughout Manila and the neighboring cities.

Like I said earlier, we didn’t have a chance to bid farewell to each other, all I knew we were told not to report to school anymore. I still kept in touch with Engelberto Marfil, Felix Marfil, Leonardo Wee and Kenny Tan. I didn’t see Danilo Gonzales ever since.

===================================

For the past few days, my thought went back to time when we were just emerging as senior students at Notre Dame of Jolo for Boys. Remember the time when Brother Michael O’Keefe punished all the senior boys for staging an aborted strike? Leonard, Thomas and few others who were summoned to the office couldn’t even make a remark let alone a straight answer to Brother.

Of course a few in the B section where I was in were so mad of the antics the A section did. I was the most vocal among the group and we didn’t have any idea what was going on until we were huddled into the office.

Do you also remember when we had our educational trip to Notre Dame College mini-museum where all the antique coins were missing from the display and we had to be frisked one-by one? Embarrassing as it might seem to be at that time that it even reached the Girls Department. Nobody admitted but it was finally found neatly placed where it was. Anyway, looking back at what we could possibly do, we can now laugh at our insolence and blunders that went with it.

WELCOME ABOARD!
===============
=
THE NOTRE DAME OF JOLO HIGH SCHOOL REUN ION!
=========================+================
=
Towards last week of the month of August 2007, I received an e-mail from Mr. Jimmy Chong, the younger brother of Ms. Justina Chong who previously owned Joe's Store about the forth-coming reunion of Notre Dame of Jolo High School both from the Boys and the Girls Department.
=
I had that ambivalent feelings about the whole thing since my batch would be at least 50 years old. Apart from being able to grab a rare opportunity to re-establish contacts with old friends, I was also feeling a bit anxious knowing that most of my friends might be walking up on the pedestral and might not be interested at all to look back let alone reminisce the past.
=
As I was also scheduled to go to Perth, Australia for some business meeting, I thought I just let the opportunity pass me by and redirected the e-mail to another old classmate, Dr. Leonardo 'Nard' Wee, who is still stationed in Languyan, Tawi-tawi. In between e-mails and cellphone SMS, somehow rather the way Leonard responded made me feel guilty of not being pro-active in the whole affair.
=
Finally on the 28 of August, I managed to get into the Malaysian Airlines bound for Manila! On top of that, my Aussie client decided to join me in Manila, since she had never been here. Of course with me around she would feel safe.
=
Last Friday, I was bale to meet up with Ms. Mimi Conculada-Salasa for the first time in more that 30 years. I have always cherish her winsome smile with her long straight hair and curvaceous physique---one of those who belong to the first top 20 of the desirable dates among the senior girls. She still possesses those winsome smile with even more voluptuous body!
=
Yes, I signed-in for The Reunion and from the short meeting with MimiCon, I was able to list a few classmates. This coming Tuesday, I shall be flying to Jolo to meet a few of them.
=
Leonard should have Dr. Francis 'Chit' Cid's contact, who is practising Medicine in Cagayan de Oro City, while an old friend also has the contact of Ms. Tisa Tulawie, now residing in the same city as Francis.
=
For the meantime, I'm signing out! This blog is still in the process of construction. Please feel free to drop a line.
